AREA OF "HANDS ON" WORKING EXPERIENCE
• Real Estates.
Experience in acquisition of large properties for hotel industry, development of property for residential use, construction, budgeting, planning and execution of housing projects, study and implementation of development rules and regulations and obtaining of necessary construction permissions from various authorities. The last business plan worked out was on IT park in Kolhapur, and information on Special Township of 135 acres of land.
• Marketing & Materials Management.
On marketing side, I have looked after all India market for PCB industry (ELECTRONICS), cotton yarn as well as handled negotiations for C & F assignments for white goods, sanitary goods. I have imported capital goods like main engines, cranes etc. as well as deck and control room machinery for ship building industry and machinery, spares and stores material for textile industry. While with Arlem Breweries, I had the opportunity to handle varied items from raw material like malt & hops to electronics components for telephone exchanges.
• Textiles.
# My initial experience in Shahu Mills related to production planning and control, project planning and execution of modernization and expansion plan for spinning, weaving and processing of cloth. During my years in this mill, a project worth eight crores (year 1973-75), involving details preparation, submission for approval as well as execution was handled by me.
# I was responsible for MIS in the form of working out daily profit and loss account (PURTA) based on budgeted cost for management control.
This exposure was major contributor for my selection with Chowgules’ where I had the opportunity to work directly under Shri V.D. Chowgule and assist him in the areas of cotton purchase and yarn sales.
# Here also I devised a one page daily report for his information that included almost all vital information such as outstanding contracts, stocks of raw material and finished goods, budget costs for pricing etc. needed for his decision making.
# Development of new markets like Madurai and Tirupur in south for coarser counts was my contribution. The decision by management to sell of the mill resulted in my shift to Ship-building industry.
• Shipbuilding.
After the textile mill was sold by Chowgules, my experience in materials management was used by them for their shipbuilding division. The main product line was deep Sea fishing trawlers, each costing around Rs. 1.35 Crore (year 1985) where in apart from indigenous machinery I handled import of navigational electronic equipments with innovations. But they also built a dredger for Madras Port Trust (tender cost Rs. 5 crore in 1986), which was a challenging assignment in which most of the procurement was done by me.
# My contribution was new and innovative approach to the imports, negotiations and finalization of orders with local as well as foreign suppliers like Cummins, Caterpillars, Furuno etc.
# Production line was kept free of materials problems to concentrate of deliveries within time as well as budgets.
# A net saving of Rs. 56 lacs (budget Rs. 3.5 crores) on material alone on the Dreger project.
• Sugar.
While I was just out from college, I had the opportunity to work as a shift chemist in sugar plant as well as a jaggery plant that used all the machinery except centrifugals.
• Logistics & Transport.
# My initial experience in this industry pertains to management of fleet of trucks and the crew for scheduled as well as unscheduled trips, calculation of diesel averages and maintenance of vehicles, road surveys etc.
# On the second occasion, I was responsible for management of tourist buses and their operations.
# This came very handy to me while working on projects like logistics for imported raw material as well as finished goods movement for Sinarmas Papers Mill. It involved bulk cargo movement from European countries to India, identification of a suitable port of destination and inland movement by rail as well as storage space.
# I also had the opportunity to study the movement of bulk cargo like iron ore from upcountry mines in Karnataka to the port of shipment and intermediate services with special reference to cost of transportation and shipment and identification of new routes and port of shipment.
# A leading shipping agency in Goa was considering setting up of Air Cargo Complex near air port Goa, and the said assignment gave me opportunity to study rules and regulations pertaining to Customs permissions for Inland Port, Container Depot and Sir Cargo Complexes.
• Tourism.
# In order to formulate a marketing strategy for three river islands, I studied requirements of tourism industry vis a vis development rules for Costal Regulation Zone. Since the only option was eco-tourism, an emerging trend, my project considered eight to ten days package for foreign/domestic tourists with five to six new destinations.
